Changes to Tylenol/Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen (Tylenol and other brands), the most commonly used medicine in children, reduces fevers and relieves pain. To make it easier for children to take, Acetaminophen is available in many different forms, including Infant Drops, Children’s Liquid and Chewable Tablets of various strengths. Infants Drops are more concentrated than Children’s Liquid which can lead to confusion and dosing errors. The manufacturers of Acetaminophen, in cooperation with the FDA, will stop making the concentrated Drops form. In the future, all liquid preparations of Acetaminophen will contain 160 milligrams (mg) per 5 milliliters (1 Teaspoon). To avoid dosing errors, it is best to discuss Acetaminophen doses in terms of mg and determine how much to give based on the information on the container detailing the concentration or strength. Our website and handouts will list recommended doses in mg based on a child’s weight.
For the next 6-12 months the concentrated Infant Drops formulations may remain on the shelves. When dosing Acetaminophen, please carefully look at the bottle to insure you are giving the right amount in mg.
